Not having a car means I don't have to worry about having bills for car payments, gas, parking, and car insurance, not to mention regular and surprise maintenance costs. I spend a lot of time planning out my bus routes, especially to nearby cities. I see the bus ride as my third place, somewhere I can spend time doing things that make me happy. Learning the bus routes has also helped me explore neighborhoods in Seattle. And if I ever need a car ride, an occasional Uber ride is much cheaper than owning a car on my own.

Suspicious letters were sent to local elections officials in at least four states, the authorities said on Thursday, including to two locations in Washington State that were said to include white powders containing the toxic drug fentanyl. Preliminary tests indicated that letters sent to at least two of four Washington election offices — in Spokane County and King County, which includes Seattle — contained fentanyl, law enforcement officials said. Georgia authorities said that a letter bound for the election office in Fulton County, which includes much of Atlanta, had been flagged as potentially including fentanyl but had not yet been delivered. And California authorities said that they were uncertain what was in letters sent to election offices in Sacramento and Los Angeles. None of the affected election offices reported that any employees were injured.

SEATTLE (AP) — Four county elections offices in Washington state were evacuated Wednesday after they received envelopes containing suspicious powders — including two that field-tested positive for fentanyl — while workers were processing ballots from Tuesday’s election. Renton police detective Robert Onishi confirmed that an envelope received by workers at a King County elections office field-tested positive for fentanyl, while Spokane Police Department spokesperson Julie Humphreys said fentanyl was found in an envelope at the Spokane County Elections office, The Seattle Times reported. Today, the company's shares are trading at $334.21 apiece, more than 142 times the price 30 years ago. Similarly, Starbucks, which went public in 1992, was trading at just 74 cents per share when Rodriguez signed his first contract. (AP) — The Biden administration is designating 31 technology hubs touching 32 states and Puerto Rico to help spur innovation and create jobs in the industries that are concentrated in these areas. President Joe Biden is set to announce the hubs on Monday at the White House with Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. The tech hubs are the result of a process Raimondo's department launched in May to distribute a total of $500 million in grants to cities. The White House has sought to elevate that message and highlight Biden's related policies as the Democratic president undertakes his 2024 reelection bid. “These Tech Hubs will catalyze investment in technologies critical to economic growth, national security, and job creation, and will help communities across the country become centers of innovation critical to American competitiveness,” the White House said Monday in an emailed statement.

NEW YORK (AP) — Toronto Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. got good news Thursday when an MRI on his right knee showed inflammation and no structural damage. Guerrero was held of the starting lineup for the second straight night as the Blue Jays completed a three-game series with the Yankees. “I think having the MRI kind of give him peace of mind was a good thing,” Toronto manager John Schneider said. “It's very hard for me not being in the lineup but thank God we're in an OK position right now,” Guerrero said. He said he had been dealing with knee pain all season but woke up with the inflammation Tuesday.

You can find examples of blue states and cities doing worse than Florida, and of other red states and cities doing better. Looking at all the data, it is hard to make much of any connection between political partisanship and crime. To put it another way, prominent Republicans are misrepresenting the country’s crime problem. Big cities generally have higher crime rates than rural and suburban areas, thanks to their density and other factors. Democrats run most big cities because urban areas tend to contain more liberal voters.

A few years ago, it was generally accepted that there were four major pro sports leagues in North America consisting of 122 teams: MLB, the NBA, the NFL, and the NHL. Take Major League Soccer. Aliyah Boston (right) and WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert pose with an Indiana Fever jersey during the 2023 WNBA Draft. This seemingly insatiable need for programming is a big reason why North American newcomers, like Major League Rugby and Major League Cricket, also have a good shot at survival. In other words, if you have ever dreamed of having a pro sports team in your neighborhood, there's never been a better chance it might actually happen.

Those Hall of Famers — like Stan Musial, Derek Jeter and so many other greats — had something in common: Except for the All-Star Game, they never changed teams. That singular identity gives their stars extra glimmer, but largely removes them from a new game sweeping the baseball landscape. The name is Immaculate Grid, and with apologies to the surging Atlanta Braves — who had eight selections for the National League’s team in Tuesday’s All-Star Game in Seattle — it’s the hottest thing going in the sport. The grid — named for the immaculate inning, in which a pitcher strikes out the side on nine pitches — is a daily quiz in the form of a tic-tac-toe board designed by Brian Minter, a software developer in suburban Atlanta. He said the game averages about 200,000 players every weekday.

The majority of tech workers in a Blind survey said they'd accept equal or lower pay. Many of those surveyed attributed their willingness to accept lower pay to an uncertain job market. Tech workers have been questioning for months whether its the end of the era of $500,000+ pay. Mass layoffs appear to have spooked many tech workers into being willing to accept lower salaries, according to a new study. The platform attributed the higher impact on mid-level tech workers to an "oversupply of mid-level talent" in the market.

To run a sound real estate business, you have to raise rent prices over time, says one investor. When the eviction moratorium in Washington expired at the end of 2021, landlords who had been feeling the squeeze could start increasing rent prices again. Having happy tenants is important. At the end of the day, to run a successful business as a landlord, you have to increase rent over time. The key is to do it while simultaneously maintaining happy tenants.
SEATTLE — For many families, paying for college is a financial burden, and experts say education-funding myths may be adding to the student loan debt crisis. "There's often this perception that somehow people are being penalized for saving for college," said Cozy Wittman, national education and partnerships speaker with College Inside Track. Parent-owned 529 college savings plans are assessed at 5.64% when filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as the FAFSA, she said, speaking at the Financial Planning Association's annual conference on Tuesday. That means for every $10,000 of 529 plan savings, roughly $564 counts toward the parents' expected family contribution, potentially reducing financial aid by roughly the same amount, according to the College Savings Plans Network. The average 529 account value was $30,287 in 2021, the College Savings Plans Network reported.
SEATTLE — If you're living together before marriage or committed long-term without plans to tie the knot, you'll need to prepare for the future — or you may face challenges later, experts say. There are "rising rates of cohabitation," with many couples skipping marriage because "they don't see the benefit," said Michelle Petrowski, a certified financial planner at the Phoenix-based financial firm Being in Abundance. Financially speaking, "it can be a blessing and a curse," she said, speaking at the Financial Planning Association's annual conference on Monday. While some couples opt out of marriage for financial reasons, they may not understand the pitfalls, Petrowski said. Here are some unexpected financial issues unmarried couples need to consider.

SEATTLE — A Washington state judge on Wednesday fined Facebook parent company Meta nearly $25 million for repeatedly and intentionally violating campaign finance disclosure law, in what is believed to be the largest campaign finance penalty in U.S. history. Where’s the corporate responsibility?”In 2018, following Ferguson’s first lawsuit, Facebook agreed to pay $238,000 and committed to transparency in campaign finance and political advertising. It subsequently said it would stop selling political ads in the state rather than comply with the requirements. “Meta was aware that its announced ‘ban’ would not, and did not, stop all such advertising from continuing to be displayed on its platform,” North wrote last month in finding that Meta violation’s were intentional. North fined Meta $30,000 for each of its 822 violations — about $24.7 million.
